I got a message from a friend that he needed some inspiration for some Wonderland outfits that aren't going to require lots of money because they're for folks how aren't big time costumers. I love this exercise to see what you can do with things you might already have in your closet or at least to buy things that you'll wear again as regular clothing. Each of these characters has a slideshow of pieces I feel would work well for them and in the real world. If you click on the picture, it should link you to where I found it.
First up is....
The keys to Alice are a blue skirt, white blouse, black headband, and black closed toe shoes. Stockings and an apron can be fun details, but if you don't want to spend the money on those things, don't sweat it! Alice needs little ladylike details in her outfit, but make sure that you're still getting pieces that you like and will wear again! And don't forget to tuck in your shirt.
The key to the Mad Hatter is to mismatch! I would choose a pair of paints or a skirt that you have and then hit up your local thrift store to grab the fugliest blazer and tie(s) you can find! I think it'd be great fun to layer a bow tie on top of a long tie. I'd thrift most of this costume if you can't find something around the house unless you're willing to spend more money on something more specifically to your liking. The big thing with this costume is going to be the hat. The links in the slideshow below for those will send you to tutorials so you can make your own!
The Cheshire Cat is a wonderfully fun character! Pink and purple should be your base colors, but you don't have to do both if you don't want to; feel free to pick on and then do black or white for the other. You want to get at least one horizontally striped top or bottom into your outfit-- most likely you won't be able to find striped shirts or pants that will coordinate. You probably will want to get ears or a tail, but if you've got one you won't necessarily need the other. I've put together two different sets for this character: men's and women's. Don't forget, you're looking for things that you'll wear again in the real world!
